Every year the Hibiscus Coast Navaratri Committee marks the last day of Navaratri by immersing a beautifully decorated Durga Matha murthi (deity) into the sea.
Last Friday Hindu devotees turned out in their numbers to witness this extraordinary event at the Block in Port Shepstone.
The highlight of the occasion is always the transporting of the murthi by helicopter out to sea.
Chairman of the Hibiscus Coast Navaratri Committee, Ashok Ramouthar, said the murthi was handcrafted from clay so that it would dissolve into its natural state, back to earth.
“Our purpose is to inspire the worship of the divine mother and empower people to cultivate a closer relationship with God. Our mission is to teach people how to worship Durga Matha with the greatest sincerity,” he explained.
