Hibberdene Happenings: Young adults undertake rite of passage

Several young congregants were confirmed at last Sunday’s service.

SEVERAL young people were confirmed during the Methodist Church service last Sunday morning. Congratulations go to Methembe, Singatha and Nelisa Linda, Siyanda and Unathi Mzimba, Aphiwe Zama and Marcel Lalsing. They are wished well on taking this huge step into their adult lives.

Poor turnout

Neither the Mtwalume craft and flea market, nor Hibberdene’s Spring Fair, held last weekend, were well supported. It seems such a pity that when people work hard for days on end to put something together, public support is almost non-existent. There was a good selection on offer at Hibberdene and those who exhibited are thanked and congratulated on their efforts. The highlight of both markets was the lovely toe-tapping music provided by Andy Els at Mtwalume and Pieter Laubscher in Hibberdene. Perhaps there are just too many flea markets these day – all clashing with one another.

Book now

Some lovely items were raffled at the Spring Fair and, as there are still a few tickets to be sold, the draw will take place at the double eye/dental clinic on October 17. As mentioned before, the second last eye clinic of the year will be held on that day, while two more dental clinics are scheduled for this year, namely October 31 and November 14. After that, both clinics will be in recess until the middle of February next year.

Church breakfasts

Richard Gardner was the speaker at last Saturday’s monthly men’s breakfast at the Methodist Church. His talk on drug abuse and the dangers associated with the use of drugs, was much appreciated by all present. Mizpah Church’s men’s breakfast takes place on the third Saturday of the month (20th), so diarise the date.

Shad season

Fishermen should note that the shad season has closed and will only reopen on December 1. Please be patient and don’t take chances thinking you won’t be caught.

Get yours today

Have you purchased your Lions’ Christmas cake yet? They are obtainable from the clinic or Salon Marguerite and at a mere R110 per cake, are excellent value for money.

Why not buy two and keep one for use as a dessert during the cold, winter months, or served with brandy, cream and custard, for a special occasion.

RIP Richard

A large crowd attended Richard O’Neill’s funeral at the Methodist Church last Saturday. He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humour and joke-telling.

Bon voyage

Jill Whitmore left for a short holiday in England last week. The main aim of the visit was to help her elder sister celebrate her 80th birthday last Friday (5th) and it is hoped she had a wonderful time with family and friends.

Sad news

Former Hibberdene resident Carol Abrahams is suffering from cancer and not doing too well. Carol spent many years in Hibberdene and was a popular character in town. She spent many winters on the coast after moving to Alberton in Gauteng and was always warmly welcomed. Please remember her in your thoughts and prayers.

Last term

School children, especially matrics, are urged to knuckle down and give of their best as they enter the final school term of 2018. It seems incredible that there are only a few weeks of school left for the year.
