Margate Moves: Crime drops in Ramsgate

Ten crimes, of which three were minor misdemeanors, were reported against 18 incidents for the same month last year.

DURING the recent water outages, Ramsgate, was one of the worst affected areas. The Ramsgate Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association has identified locations where five static tanks will be placed and the Community Policing Forum has agreed to protect the tanks especially at night.

The RRRA has also set up an emergency number which can be activated when a water crisis occurs. The number to note is 073 6585469.

Take note the association’s committee meets at the Community Hall in Glenmarkie Road, on the third Tuesday of each month at 4pm. The next meeting is on September 18 and all residents are invited to attend and to bring ideas to the executive. If you love the music of the brother and sister duo Richard and Karen Carpenter then get yourself to the Azalea Hall at Margate Retirement Village next Saturday (22nd).

`A Tribute to the Carpenters’ is the next supper theatre offering by the Residents’ Activities’ Committee at Margate Retirement Village.

Produced by Evan Roberts and starring talented singers Shylo Pereira and Samantha Landers the show will feature all those well loved hits from the 1970s.

Pack a picnic supper and a few liquid refreshments – doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 7pm.

Once a month the RAC holds a movie afternoon where classic films are screened at the Ronnie Baker Hall. On offer this month is the hit musical `South Pacific’ (music composed by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein).

The film version starring Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi, will be shown this Sunday (16th) at 2.30pm. Cost is R5 which includes tea and biscuits (at intermission).

More markets

There’s another community flea market this weekend. It takes place at the Doxa Church (Margate’s crossroads intersection) this Saturday (15th) from 8am to 1pm. Goods on offer include previously owned goods, arts and crafts, leather and denim handbags and hand-made clothing. Best of all is the variety of fair food that will be on sale. Sebenza Village will host the fair on the 22nd and on Sunday (23rd) the venue is the Hibiscus Mall parking area from 8am until 2pm.

Just a little prick

The Ramsgate Lions Club will be conducting sugar testing at the Hibiscus Mall in Margate this Saturday (15th) from 9am to 12.30pm. One little prick could save your life as diabetes is becoming one of the most life threatening illnesses in the world. The test takes five seconds.

Quaff or sip

More than 100 wines from 30 estates will be on offer at this year’s South Coast Spring Wine Festival. The venue is Riverbend Conference Centre and the date to save is Saturday (22nd) from 5.30pm. A new addition is the inclusion of a secret gin bar offering a variety of artisanal gins. Tickets, at R180 per person, which includes a meal and a tasting glass, are on sale from the Riverbend shop.

Dream machines

The Porsche Owners Club of South Africa has chosen the South Coast as the venue for its 70th anniversary celebrations next weekend.

Gymkhana and Top End racing events take place at Dezzi’s Raceway on September 21 and 22.

And on Sunday (23rd) those gleaming, dream machines will be on show at the Margate Fishing Pier where they will take part in the Porsche Club’s `Show and Shine’ where everyone is invited to go along and check out the uber cool cars. The club has named the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) as its charity and in return the institute will hold a demo day at Margate beach. Rescue and other operations will be featured.

In the pink

Margate Bowling Club is planning a Pink Drive Charity Day and is hoping for lots of support. The cancer awareness bowling tournament will be played on Sunday, September 30 from 9am to 1pm. Lots of prizes on offer as well as raffles, live music and good food will help to make it a fun day. Bowlers are asked to wear something pink even if it is only shoelaces.

Get well wishes

Norma Cominos from Margate Retirement Village had a nasty fall recently – she is showered with get well soon wishes. Aubrey du Plooy of Ramsgate underwent major surgery in Pretoria on Monday this week. May he soon be on the road to recovery.

Condolences

Deepest sympathy is extended to twins John and Juliet Park and their families on the death of their beloved mother Sheila Park (72). She died in Margate Hospital last Friday after a brave battle against emphysema. Her funeral service takes place at St Margaret’s Anglican Church in Margate this Saturday (15th) at 10am. Sheila was the former assistant editor at the South Coast Herald.

Condolences also go to the family and friends of Rhona Oosthuis (93) who died recently. She was the wife of the late Rev Ray Oosthuis who served the South Coast for many years. Rhona leaves behind three children, Audeen, Graham and Davind, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
