Former Tweni admin manager guilty of theft

Riana Kuilder had started out as a cashier but because of her banking experience was soon promoted to administrative manager.

Former admin manager, Riana Kuilder (42) has been found guilty of theft in the Port Shepstone Regional Court.

The charges stemmed from the period March 2013 to May 2014 when Kuilder was employed at Abingdon Road Spar in Umtentweni.

During this period, Kuilder, who lives in Hibberdene, stole an amount of R65 270 from her employer by making false entries on the petty cash schedules and pocketing the cash.

The court heard how Kuilder had started out as a cashier but thanks to her banking experience was soon promoted to administrative manager and entrusted with the store’s keys.

The owner of the business had trusted her implicitly, and she was not supervised at all.

Kuilder pleaded not guilty.

Regional Magistrate Johann Bester said that it was simply too much of a coincidence that an error could be repeated so many times and at the same time, that money accounted for on spreadsheets happened to be missing.

“After the departure of Kuilder, the accounts balanced as they should have . Her evidence is rejected as being false beyond a reasonable doubt. It is found that she had knowingly and falsely overstated the amounts concerned.”

Kuilder will be sentenced in October.
