Margate Moves: No more winter blues

There's plenty of entertainment lined up to keep you warm.

SHOWS at the Azalea Hall, at Margate Retirement Village are definitely putting the venue at the top of the South Coast’s entertainment hot spots.

The recent `Winter Wonderland’ featuring the talented Calli Thomson and Vicky de Villiers collectively known as `Saxadelic’ was another fabulous production. Vicky and Calli are a great sax and piano duo and they performed instrumental and easy to listen to songs as well as lots of sing-along carols.

One of the highlights was a delightful performance by two young music students – Liandri Nieuwenhuys and Lana Meyer. They have beautiful voices and are both accomplished guitarists.

The theme at the supper theatre offering was `Christmas in July’ and kudos to the RAC for transforming the hall into a `winter wonderland white Christmas’. Patrons also arrived kitted out in their favourite festive season outfits and some even dined on traditional fare complete with mince pies and brandy pudding.

Many think the concept of celebrating Christmas in July is a new one. No, it’s not, it has been around since the 1930s. Apparently it started at a girls’ camp in Brevard, North Carolina in the USA in July 1933.

Glitz and glam

Next up at the village on August 25 is a bit of glitter to sparkle up your life. This month’s supper theatre offering at the Azalea Hall is the award-winning hit show `Glitter Girls’ featuring the fabulous Lisa Bobbert, Marion Loudon and Liesl Coppin.

Pack a picnic supper, take along your own liquid refreshments, glasses and utensils and join the gorgeous `girls’ at their 20-year high school reunion.

And the show tells a story not just a musical tribute. It’s going to be like stepping back into that amazing Moulin Rouge time.

Doors open at 6pm to give everyone enough time to eat and the curtain goes up at 7pm. Tickets at R80 per person are on sale from the RAC or admin offices at the village or phone 039 3125000.

Take note the next classic movie matinee at the village is `High Society’. Starring Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly this musical comedy is ranked as one of the all-time greats.

It will be screened at the Ronnie Baker Hall this Sunday (19th) at 2pm.
