Margate Moves: Errol Boyley Centenary Exhibition is still open

The exhibition, a celebration of the South African master painter who together with his wife Jocelyn, owned the original gallery in Ramsgate, is well worth taking in.

The Artists’ Gallery in Ramsgate is honoured to feature the Errol Boyley Centenary Exhibition. The exhibition, which opened last Thursday, was one of last weekend’s Ramsgate Book and Art Festival’s flagship events. Although the festival is over the good news is that `Boyley’s World’ is still open to the public to view for two weeks. The exhibition, a celebration of the South African master painter who together with his wife Jocelyn, owned the original gallery in Ramsgate, is well worth taking in.

Art by the Sea opened its annual exhibition at Margate Art Museum last Wednesday.

Members of the 40-year old club have, over the years, produced excellent pieces, and the work on show at this year’s exhibition will ensure the club’s reputation is enhanced. The display will be on show at the art museum until the end of August. Many of the pieces are also for sale.

Fab festival

Huge kudos to the organisers of Ramsgate’s literary festival. The `homegrown’ festival run under the auspices of Ramsgate Tourism and the Ramsgate Conservancy opened last Thursday evening. An amazing collection of inspirational and humorous authors and poets were persuaded to be part of this year’s event. As were many talented artists, sculptors and photographers. The quaint village did the South Coast proud with its fourth festival which featured pop up exhibitions, artists’ workshops, poetry readings, authors’ talks, a comedy evening, meditation classes, children’s theatre, a burlesque-style cabaret show and beach walk. This is one festival that needs support to transform it into a major player on the literary calendar.

Condolences

Deepest sympathy to the families and friends of Greet Bos and Henk Swart who died last Friday. Ironically, at one stage they lived across the road from one another in Ronwil Road, Ramsgate.

Greet came to South Africa with her husband Roelof from Holland in 1964 to work at Sasol.

At the end of their contract the Boses and their children Albert and Annelies returned to Gronining in the Netherlands.

But they missed their adopted country and after three years returned to South Africa where both Greet and Roelof worked in the gold mining industry in Welkom for many years. They bought a macadamia nut farm in Bushy Vales and relocated to the South Coast and `retired’ to Ramsgate a few years ago. Greet (78) continued to work at her daughter’s hairdressing salon. She suffered a stroke last Wednesday night and was rushed to Margate Hospital. She was taken by ambulance to St Augustine’s where she died on Friday morning. She also leaves behind her daughter-in-law Linda, granddaughters Courtney and Danica and a great-grandson Fox.

Henk who hailed from Klerksdorp spent many years teaching at the Sayidi TVET College in Oslo Beach. In recent years he is probably best remembered for karaoke. Henk and his wife Felicity kept locals well entertained with their wonderful karaoke parties up and down the coast. They lived in Ramsgate for many years before moving to Munster. Henk fought a brave fight against his illness. His funeral service will be held at the AGS Church, 24 Ramge Road, Oslo Beach on Thursday (August 9) at 11am.
