He said that the gang had slapped him and produced knives, then restrained him by pinning him to the ground. While this was happening, his girlfriend had tried to escape.

“She tried to run away, but they caught her and she was forced to take off her clothes as they said they would stab out her eyes,” said Port Shepstone communications officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. “They then allegedly started touching her private parts and one of the men raped her.”

When she finally managed to flee from the men, she and her boyfriend ran to a taxi nearby.

The male victim said that a policeman had been in the area when all this had occurred and had acted fast, arresting the gang retrieving the stolen items.

The gang was taken to the Hibberdene police station where they were charged with rape and robbery.

When the victim attended court last week, he did manage to identify two of the nine suspects in custody. He also said that he had seen their faces before the incident occurred, as they were all from the same area and often hung out at the same places.

According to the victim, when the gang was arrested in the tavern, they apologised for their crimes and seemed remorseful.

Visual evidence was then provided in court by the Hibberdene Saps and the gang was taken back into police custody.
