Lighthouse seniors enjoy tour to Mpenjati reserve

Spending time outdoors can benefit the overall wellbeing of seniors.

Lighthouse Community Services’ senior citizens’ meeting took a different form (or shall we say a different route) last Saturday. Seniors did not gather at their regular meeting spot, the Port Shepstone Recovery Centre’s hall, but enjoyed a wonderful trip to Mpenjati Nature Reserve.

There, they engaged in a fascinating tour of the reserve, played a number of games and enjoyed a scrumptious lunch. Miss Teen Commonwealth first princess, Tarusha Gounder, joined the seniors on their trip, as well as sponsored them with various prizes, soft drinks and chips.

Chairman, Sunil Singh, said that his organisation salutes senior citizens. “With age comes wisdom and what better way to celebrate life than appreciating nature’s wonders?” remarked Mr Singh. “There are many fun activities elderly people can take part in to keep their minds sharp, bodies strong and spirits high. Whether it’s spending time outdoors, playing games with family and friends, or spending time working on a favourite hobby, doing things they love can benefit the overall wellbeing of all seniors.”

Mr Singh added that, naturally, not every senior shared the same interests . “Joining a senior citizen centre is a great way to meet other people who share similar interests and engage in a wide range of activities.”

The organisation’s next senior citizens’ meeting takes place at Port Shepstone Recovery Centre hall on May 12 at 10am for 10.30am.
