Community members from surrounding areas and residents from Port Edward came out in their numbers to find out what plans the municipality had for their communities and whether the municipality had kept their promises in the previous financial year.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality kicked off its first Integrated Development Programme (IDP) and budget roadshow for the year 2018/2019 at Kwa-Nzimakwe Tribal Court last week.

Feedback concerning some projects that had been completed by RNM and Ugu Municipality were outlined by both RNM mayor Cynthia Mqwebu and Ugu mayor Mondli Chiliza.

Once again, the Kwa-Nzimakwe housing project, construction of roads and water-related issues topped the list of complaints from community members, who said they had hoped the municipality would prioritise these in their planning.

During the meeting, imminent electricity price hikes and rates were discussed. Councillor Mqwebu said without these, the municipality could not provide adequate services to its communities.

Although some community members said they were thankful for some projects in the area, a lot still needed to be done to ensure that these projects were completed on time.

The roadshows are held as part of the municipality’s plan to involve residents in the next financial year budget and planning.

Cllr Mqwebu said the meeting was meant to highlight service delivery achievements in each ward and present the proposed budget and projects for the wards in each cluster.

She said the meeting was also to give an opportunity for residents and community members to comment on the draft IDP and budget before it was adopted by council.
