Seniors need companionship

It is amazing how the monthly meetings have made a difference in their lives.

Lighthouse Community Services’ monthly senior citizens’ meeting was once again well attended at the Port Shepstone Recovery Centre’s hall last Saturday. Guests got the opportunity to watch a movie, ‘Mystic India,’ complete with popcorn and soft drinks. The centre is a gathering place for seniors to dance, sing, eat a hot, nutritious lunch and talk with friends.

The organisation’s chairman, Sunil Singh, said that many of the seniors who come to the meetings are disconnected from their families, or they live alone, or have family in other countries. “This is their time! If it weren’t to happen, it would be missed and it is important that we target many of the seniors who want companionship and friendship.”

Sunil pointed out that seniors get to try things they wouldn’t do for themselves. “We try to give them various tasks to keep their bodies and minds active. It’s amazing how our monthly meetings make a difference in their lives.” The seniors will be going on a trip to Impenjati on Saturday, April 14.
