Teen beaten, threatened and raped near Port Shepstone

He stuffed a towel in her mouth to prevent her from screaming for help.

Qobolwakhe Justice Gumbi (29) will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the 2013 rape of a 14-year-old girl.

Sentence was handed down  in the Sottburgh Magistrate’s court on Monday this week.

The conviction was in large part due to the excellent investigations and long hours of hard work put in by Detective Sergeant Shaun Pillay of the Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
On December 2, 2013  Gumbi went to the home of his victim in the Nyavini area in Msinsini near Port Shepstone, where he beat the teenager with an electrical cord, threatened her with a knife and fired a shot to further intimidate her.
He stuffed a towel in her mouth to prevent her from screaming for help.
Investigations revealed that the suspect was being held in Durban on  a charge of armed robbery for an incident which occurred in Verulam in May 2015.
However, these charges were later withdrawn, but he was called to stand trial for the rape.
