Margate Moves: Jilly will be missed by many

She had the ability to persuade her cast to wear luminous tights, don funny hats while dancing and singing in front of an audience.

“I knew I had married a diamond.” These words were spoken by Dr Piet van Eeden as he toasted his bride of 60 years, Jill at their diamond wedding anniversary lunch on July 7, 2016.

Sadly he died in February last year and last Thursday `his diamond’ lost her long and brave battle. Deepest sympathy is extended to the couple’s son Simon, daughter-in-law Stephanie, family and friends.

Jill and Piet were hard-working members of the Hibiscus Rotary Club. They were both honoured for the work they did for the Flower Foundation and for promoting education. Another of Jill’s amazing talents was to produce first-class variety shows. She had the ability to persuade her cast to wear luminous tights, don funny hats while dancing and singing in front of an audience.

Her funeral service takes place at the Margate Methodist Church today (7th) at 2.30pm.

Top tour

Acclaimed folk guitarist Nibs van der Spuy has joined forces with Iranian virtuoso, Yasamin Shahhosseini for their South African `Roots and Clouds’ tour. And the good news is that they will perform in Ramsgate this weekend.

Yasamin who hails from Tehran was discovered at an early age and her rare, virtuosic talent on the oud won her many solo competitions which led her to study traditional Persian music at the University of Tehran. She has performed in many countries including Germany and Australia and she released her first album `Gahan’ in 2015.

Nibs has played the South African folk scene for many years and has released more than 10 albums. He has a truly original sound and was the support act when Crosby, Stills and Nash toured the country.

Rocky Ridge in Fascadale Road is the venue for the collaborative gig this Sunday (11th). Doors open at 12pm and Nibs and Yasamin will be on stage from 2pm. Entry is R100 per person – phone 072 4736095 to book.
