Jesslyn, who was standing next to Loureen when the rockets went off, was injured on the arm.

New Year’s Eve could have ended badly for two youngsters who were injured by an errant firework while celebrating on Southport beach.

Loureen van der Merwe (13) and her friend, Jesslyn Pretorius (12) of Sunwich Port were watching the firework display when someone tied several rockets together, and set them in the sand.

They were however not placed deeply enough, and the rope with which they were bound burnt off, sending the rockets exploding into the crowd.

Loureen van der Merwe’s leg was burnt by the stray firework.

“I remember people shouting and running. I saw one of the rockets pass me, and then one exploded right next to my leg, burning me,” said Loureen.

Jesslyn, who was standing next to Loureen when the rockets went off, was injured on the arm.

“It was really scary when it happened, and it hurt a lot,” she added.

A stray rocket left Jesslyn Pretorius with an injured arm.

Loureen’s father, Louis, said his daughter was very lucky not to have been seriously injured, and that as animal lovers, they were horrified that the loud bangs had continued until after 3am.

‘We really hope that fireworks will be banned soon,” he said.
