Six-month-old baby girl raped in Mtwalume

The baby was found hidden in the bush, wearing only her nappy.

The frantic 10-hour search for a missing baby girl ended earlier today (Wednesday) when the little girl was found hidden in the bush, wearing just a nappy.

She had been raped.

The search began on Tuesday night this week, when police from Hibberdene were called after the baby was reported missing in Mtwalume.

According to police, the baby’s mother had left her daughter and a seven-year-old boy in one room while she went to another room to fetch food.

“The mother told officers that she had consumed alcohol before she returned to find the boy sleeping and the baby missing,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

A joint search conducted by Hibberdene police and the community yielded no results.

At around 6am this morning (Wednesday) the child was found hidden in a bushy area.

“Police were shocked and very distressed as it appeared that she had been sexually violated,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

The baby was taken to the Thutuzela Care Centre and will probably be transferred to Durban.

No one has been arrested as yet.
