South Coast cops clamp down on drunk driving, drinking in public

Numerous arrests were made for being drunk in public and driving under the influence of alcohol.

POLICE have warned that they will be clamping down on drunk driving and drinking in public this Christmas.

As a result of their visible presence on Port Shepstone beach last Saturday, no serious incidents were reported but officers were concerned at the number of young teenagers who are consuming alcohol.

Saps have joined forces with Law Enforcement officers from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality to ensure that beach goers are safe and are not targeted by criminals.

Senior officers, including Ugu cluster commander, Major-General Sethenya Nxamagele; deputy cluster commander, Brigadier Bongani Sibiya;  Margate SAPS station commander, Brigadier William Slabbert and Brigadier Sandra Nala of Port Shepstone, will all work side by side with their officers in their respective areas.

“Numerous arrests for being drunk in public and driving under the influence of alcohol have already been made. The number of youngsters who are under the influence of alcohol is of particular concern. They can easily become the victims of rape or robbery,” warned police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

She confirmed that no serious incidents were reported on the beaches on Saturday. Cluster commander Maj-Gen Nxamagele thanked everyone for sacrificing their off-time to ensure a quiet day along the beaches.

She added that there will be strong police presence right up to New Year’s Day.
