New RDP houses under construction in KwaNzimakwe

The housing project will cost some R64-million

There is hope at last for the KwaNzimakwe community – they will soon be living in their very own RDP homes.

The RDP housing project was officially launched by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Human Settlements, Ravi Pillay and the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality at the Braemar sportsfield last Thursday.

This formed part of provincial government’s efforts to address the housing problems found in most local municipalities.

Five hundred houses are scheduled to be built, with 43 already completed, and an additional 91 currently at roof level.

According to MEC Pillay, about R64-million will be spent on the project.

Despite a setback two months ago, when a local business forum and sub-contractors shut the project down for nearly a month, MEC Ravi said this was the beginning of a new life and journey for those without homes.

The MEC added that a number of job opportunities had been created and urged the community to work together to ensure the project was completed on time.

One of those in line for a new home is a delighted Nosipho Mbhele (32) who currently lives in a mud house with her eight siblings.

“After years of waiting, I am very happy to be receiving a proper house. And if my parents were still alive, I am sure they would be too,” she said.
