COMMUTERS are being warned of possible mass taxi strike action scheduled to take place next Wednesday, September 27.

This follows certain issues between local taxi associations and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.

Taxi associations have threatened to bring all taxi operations on the South Coast to a standstill if proper answers are not provided by the municipality.

On the same day, Cosatu will be going on a national strike against corruption, state capture and job losses.

South African National Taxi Association Council Association provincial spokesman, Mandla Mzelemu, said there was a lack of communication from the municipality on what was happening with the Intermodal Facility.

In 2015, municipal manager Max Mbili announced big plans for the Port Shepstone taxi rank.

The plan was to convert the taxi rank into an integrated, ‘intermodal’ facility which also included a new shopping mall.

Two years later, nothing has yet been done.

“If the municipality says it is planning to improve our taxi rank, we have a right to know what’s happening,” said Mr Mzelemu.

He said they had had a meeting with SAPS and municipal spokesman Simon April and were anticipating another. “If they don’t give us a meeting date before Wednesday, we are going ahead with the march,” he said.

Mr April said the municipality was aware of the threatened mass strike action.
