Margate Moves: Young entrepreneur rocks it

Southbroom Golf Club will celebrate Women's Day rather stylishly by hosting a high tea on Wednesday, August 9 from 3pm to 5pm.

 

FOR many weeks Daniel Houghton collected pebbles, stones and rocks of all shapes and sizes. He sorted, cleaned and polished them and boldly declared to his family that he was opening a Rock Shop.

On the first day of the school holidays he set up his enterprise comprising a table, two chairs, the merchandise and his handmade advertising poster. And confident of making many sales, the young businessman employed his sister April to be his assistant.

Their grandfather Howard Osborne of Ramsgate is holding thumbs the venture will, like Richard Branson’s `Rolling Stone’, just take off.

Lights please

Margate’s CBD is in dire need of a little light. Most of the street lamps along Marine Drive are not working and it has been this way for months.

Answers from the call centre have ranged from no light bulbs are available to no staff as everyone is either on leave or sick. In fact there are many place along Marine Drive from Uvongo to Ramsgate that are literally in the dark.

Tea for three

Southbroom Golf Club will celebrate Women’s Day rather stylishly by hosting a high tea on Wednesday, August 9 from 3pm to 5pm.

Brendon Rademeyer and Ceresé Botha man their stall at the South Coast Lions’ Show.

Dainty profiteroles, mini cakes, cream scones, shortbread slices, chocolate truffles, vol au vents, croustades and a selection of sandwiches will be on the menu along with tea, coffee and bubbly.

Guests will also be treated to a fashion show and stand the chance of winning great giveaway prizes.

Step out

Southbroom Conservancy will host the Southern Shoreline Challenge from Ramsgate’s Whale Deck to Marina Beach this Sunday, July 23.

Registration is from 7am and the walk starts at 7.30am. The cost is R20 per person and breakfast rolls and coffee will be on sale at R30. All proceeds will go to the conservancy.

Be entertained

There’s lots of entertainment lined up over the coming two weeks. First up is the latest production from the Hibiscus Amateur Theatrical Society (Hats). Their delightful show `Christmas in July’ will be staged at the Ramsgate Retirement Village on July 24 – phone 039 3126342 to book and there’s another performance at Margate Country Club on July 30th. Phone 039 3120571 to reserve your seats. Proceeds from the shows will be donated to the SPCA.

Mellow music

The acclaimed duo `Saxadelic’ comprising saxophonist Vicky de Villiers and keyboard whiz Calli Thomson will entertain at a `Christmas in July’ supper theatre offering at Azalea Hall at Margate Retirement Village next Saturday, July 29th.

Doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 7pm.

Jeani and Frikkie Strauss of Ramsgate enter their first Grandparents’ Walk, at St Michael’s.

Take along your own hamper of festive fare and liquid refreshments for an evening of jazz, pop and instrumental numbers with a few Christmas carols as well.

On show

Talented members of Art by the Sea, the coast’s longest established art club will hold an exhibition of their work next month.

The venue is Margate Art Museum where a range of exciting work will be offered for sale at reasonable prices.

The exhibition opens on August 3, at 5.30pm and runs until the end of the month. Make a date to go and view this excellent exhibition.

Be a little racy

Don’t back the wrong horse by forgetting to diarise the Donkey Derby. This fun fund-raiser in aid of South Coast Hospice takes place at the Margate Bowling Club next Saturday, July 29 at 6pm. Cost is R100 per person which includes a two course meal and a cabaret show along with the racing.

Final party

Don’t miss the final Mardi Gras in Margate. The street party in Marine Drive tonight (Wednesday 19th) is hosted by the Margate Business Association.
