THERE was a festive atmosphere at Margate Country Club last Saturday, the venue for the Hibiscus Rotary Club’s annual induction dinner. Members of the club witnessed the chains of office being handed over to Anne Thompson from outgoing president Penny Spence.
It was also a time to reflect on the many milestones the Hibiscus Rotary Club had achieved during the past year as well as the exemplary service the club had given to its community.

Anne said that she was honoured to be leading Hibiscus Rotary Club. “I look forward to the many challenges and great projects planned for the year ahead,” she explained.
She pointed out that every day, in many ways large and small, Rotarians made a difference in the lives of people in our local communities and internationally. “We should be proud of Rotary’s heritage and our own part in that heritage.”

She reminded her guests that on February 23, 2018 Rotary would celebrate its 113th birthday and on April 22, 2018 it would celebrate the Rotary Foundation’s 101st anniversary. “It is our Foundation and our support of that Foundation, that empowers much of what we do to make a difference in our world,” said Anne.
“It’s up to us to ensure that Rotary will survive and thrive, throughout its second century of service,” she pointed out.
“I am confident that, with the support of my fellow members and the local community, the club will continue to serve with dedication and pride.”
It was a great social evening but greatly enhanced by the awarding of two Paul Harris Fellowships and two Paul Harris Sapphire Pins.
Peter Shamotta received his Paul Harris Fellowship for his ongoing management of the Uvongo Flea Market, a major Hibiscus Rotary Club project. The second Paul Harris Fellowship went to Cathy de Boer for her vocational service to the club and for overseeing many of the club’s vocational projects.

Ina Delve, who was re-inducted as the Rotary Ann president, received her Sapphire Pin for her long and devoted service to Hibiscus Rotary and her continuing work as a member of the club. “Her work has been unceasing in support of both Rotary in general and the club in particular,” said Anne.
The other Sapphire Pin went to another long-serving and hard-working member of the Hibiscus Rotary Club, Rob Gilligan, described as a senior statesman who had encouraged his club to raise money for the Rotary Foundation.
An extremely active Rotarian, he has served many years as club president and has been involved in many of the club’s projects.
