Alcohol seized at informal settlement

Liquor has been found to be a contributing factor in many criminal cases.

A POLICE operation held at Masinenge Informal Settlement and other areas in Margate last Thursday night shows police in a positive light in fighting crime.

The operation was conducted by Ugu Cluster commander, Major-General Sethenya Nxamagele and other senior officers from the cluster, to look for wanted suspects, dangerous weapons, unlicensed firearms and suspected stolen property.

During the operation, numerous dwellings were examined and 435 people were searched.

“Seventy four crates of liquor were seized from illegal liquor outlets and seven people were charged with dealing in liquor without a licence. They paid admission of guilt fines,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Six men were also charged with being in possession of dagga. They also paid admission of guilt fines. One person was arrested for murder and four for housebreaking.

“In many criminal cases, such as assault, rape and even murder, liquor was found to be a contributing factor. This operation has made an impact in preventing such crime from occurring.

While performing their duty to protect and serve the community, the police officers were in danger of tripping over illegal electricity cables running through the settlement. This complicated their task but will not stop police from carrying out their duties,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

Cluster Commander Major-General Nxamagele complimented the officers for assisting during the operation.
