Kind farmer Scott Kvalsvig has a heart for hooves

With economic times increasingly becoming harder and winter fast approaching, there is a concern that more 'barnyard' animals may need assistance.

FIVE horses were happily rehomed at Scott Kvalsvig’s farm in Marburg last Friday.

The Lower South Coast SPCA came into the firing line on social media last week regarding the welfare of the string of horses kept on a property in Ramsgate.

But the horses, now named Blaze, Shadow, Mercury, Bailey and Waffles, are now living contentedly at Scott’s farm, which is ‘dreamland’ for horses and donkeys.

A kind-hearted man, Scott has opened his farm to assist with abused and neglected farm animals and it is hard to believe that this pretty and peaceful place is just inland of Marburg.

With the help of Karen Jefferys, who stables her horses at the farm and overseers the welfare of the rescues, he has started, with the assistance of the Lower South Coast SPCA, an incredible sanctuary for the ‘hoofed’ animals who deserve a second chance.

Scott, who has been actively involved in helping the SPCA over the last 22 years, said he has cases where animals have been dumped at his front gate, many of which have been either abused, or are old or undernourished.

“Please donate your animals to us rather than leave them to suffer. We won’t ask any questions,” he pleads.

It’s a first for the South Coast and ‘equine lovers’ can now adopt a ‘rescued’ horse or donkey for R800 a month, for which you can come and brush, feed and interact with your pet by giving it lots of love and attention.

There is also an urgent call for the community and businesses to assist with a donation of wire, poles or even gates to help fence off the additional hectares of land available for the animals.

Karen said any kind of donation, big or small, would be welcomed. “Bring a bag of apples or carrots and come and help groom and pet them. The horses and donkeys will really love the attention,” she added.

Karen and Scott are both extremely passionate about animals. The beauty of Scott’s farm is that there are hectares of land for the horses, donkeys and even a cow named ‘Bullie’ and a flock of peacocks to roam freely.

The wide open fields are the closest that horses and donkeys will get to living in the natural form.

“The land is spacious and sunny and the ground is soft and nutritious. This kind of environment is the perfect space for a healthy and happy horse,” he said. And Scott is so spot on, the animals look content and VERY happy.

These horse all come from sad backgrounds but have been given a second chance at Scott Kvalsvig’s farm.

Karen has started a ‘Hearts for Hoofs’ Facebook page and the community can follow the progress of the animals that arrive at the farm.

Anyone who can help with any donations of 2.4 and 1.8 metre poles, wire or lick blocks and concentrate meals can contact the Lower South Coast SPCA and to mark it for the ‘equine rescue’.
