Tuesday Rostrum – thirty years and still going strong

Tuesday Rostrum had 30 wonderful reasons to celebrate.

WHEN a small group of local women met 30 years ago to discuss then formation of a local club for thinking women, little did they know what a success their idea would be.

This week their brainchild, Tuesday Rostrum, celebrated its 30th anniversary and president Bev Barker and her committee pulled out all stops to ensure that it was a celebration of note.

At the annual general meeting that preceded the luncheon party, Bev reported on the many highlights of the club’s 30th year, adding that membership had increase, which was a good sign.

Members had been entertained and enlightened by some excellent speakers who had talked about a wide range of subjects, she said. At the lunches they had heard about a Himalayan journey to the Valley of Flowers and some moving stories about the late former president Nelson Mandela from his former jailer.

Former Tuesday Rostrum presidents, including (from left) Felicity Wethered, Liz Jones and founder president Pam Hofmann, have all left their unique mark on the club.

After celebrating Christmas in June the club had been fascinated by the story of the ‘Laird of Matjiesfonein’ in July. Other subjects that provided food for thought had included cannabis, scams, stain glass art, photography and ‘a higher form of communication’.

Entertainers Cat Simoni and Paul Spence had earned sustained applause at the Christmas bunch at San Lameer and charming South African actor Clive Scott aka Ted had rounded off a wonderful year with plenty of laughs.

Before wrapping up proceedings treasurer Kitty Steenman assured members that the club was in a sound financial position. The committee was then re-elected en bloc, with Bev retaining the reins to serve the second year of her term as president. The meeting concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks for the committee – and then the party began.

The beautifully decorated venue, decked out in black and white with touches of pink, really set the scene and the sumptuous desert buffet table, laden with gorgeous sweet treats concocted by the talented Mbango team. put everyone in a celebratory mood.

A number of former members had been invited, including the club’s very first president, Pam Hofmann, so there were many happy reunions of old friends. Also at the the party were former presidents Felicity Wethered and Liz Jones, representing a long line of wonderful presidents who, over the years, had all brought something unique and special to the club.

Founder members at the gathering included Mary Halle, Eleanor Bard, Maggie Abbott, Elvira Venter and Jean Cole. A set of scrap books told the story of the club’s history, bringing back many memories and showing that the South Coast Herald had been closely associated with the club since its inception.

Guests enjoyed a delicious lunch and some absolutely gorgeous deserts even though the buffet had looked almost too pretty to eat. Then it was time for a bit of fun, with charming and talented singer Cole van Dais providing the top notch entertainment.

First she had everyone singing and clapping along then everyone was on their feet, dancing, forming a Conga line and having a simply wonderful time.

Here’s hoping the wonderful ‘friendly women’s club’ will be around for many more landmark occasions – and for at least another 30 years.
