ACTING on intelligence received indicating that a group four men were planning to carry out an armed robbery in Scottburgh on Wendesday evening, April 5, members of the Scottburgh Cluster Detective Task Team and Road Traffic Inspectorate pounced on the men.
The vehicle was spotted at the Scottburgh Mall where police noticed four men behaving suspiciously.
“They kept up observation and, with back-up from traffic officers from the Park Rynie RTI and Scottburgh Crime Prevention Unit, followed the vehicle to Park Rynie,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

The vehicle turned into Fifth Street and travelled down the road, parking in a dark area and switching off the headlights. Thinking they had blended in with their surroundings, the men were quickly pounced on by the SAPS.
“They were ordered to alight from their vehicle so that police could carry out a search,” said Captain Pandarum.
One of the suspects attempted to assault a police officer by throwing a punch, but he was quickly subdued and arrested. Seized during the search was a .38 Special long barrel revolver as well as two rounds of ammunition. The revolver’s serial number had been ground off.

Appearing in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, April 6, facing charges of being in the unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm, altering a firearm serial number and possession of ammunition, 27-year-old Bongumusa Ngcobo was remanded back into police custody pending further investigations.
The firearm will be sent for ballistics testing in order to determine whether it has been used in other crimes. Ngcobo will also be profiled to check if he is wanted in connection to other cases being investigated at present.
