THERE is a good reason Harmony Hill Animal Hotel was given its name – all the animals live harmoniously together on a pretty hill inland from Sea Park.
Owners of Harmony Hill, Renate Haussman and Penny Taylor, not only run a luxury pet boarding kennels but also an amazing rescue mission called Harmony Hill Rescue Dogs, catering for abused, abandoned, unwanted and neglected dogs and Cat’s Cradle for abandoned cats and kittens.
The beautiful, well-kept smallholding is a ‘paradise for pets’ and is home to 90 cats and 14 kittens, eight dogs and 17 puppies – all looking for forever, loving homes.
“Most of our rescued dogs have faced some sort of cruelty. In one case, we rescued a dog tied to a tree, left to starve to death, and another was found along the railway line,” said Penny.
At Harmony Hill the animals are fed only premium foods which is why they are in such excellent condition.

Staff also go the extra mile to ensure that all rescues are able to be easily rehomed and spend a lot of time rehabilitating dogs which have never lived in a home environment.
“We can also assist pet owners with their animals which have behavioural problems and put them in touch with dog trainers who can help,” said Penny.
However, the safe haven is battling to keep afloat financially and needs the public’s help.
It costs Harmony Hill R5,60 to feed a cat two meals a day and R7,20 for a dog.
So in order to raise funds they have started the ‘buy a cushion or toy and feed a cat or dog for a day’ campaign.
Penny has taught her staff to design patchwork cushions, which range in cost from R5 to R60.
The staff sell these gorgeous hand-made cushions and soft toys at the local taxi ranks. “The initiative will not only generate an income but also, hopefully, create and develop skills,” said Penny.
The lovely cushions are also being sold at Spiller Girls’ Charity Shop at Spiller’s Wharf in Port Shepstone.
Harmony Hill is the most delightful and peaceful place to visit, so pack a picnic basket ( don’t forget the fish paste sandwiches for the kitties) and escape to this special place on the hill.
The farm is also open to responsible owners who would like to bring their dogs for a walk or a swim in the dam.
