A DARK cloud hangs over Ugu administration as workers belonging to the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) say they want nothing to do with the new mayor, Mondli Chiliza.

The angry workers accused Councillor Chiliza of being a capitalist who refuses to act on their pleas.
Meanwhile, the union chairman, Clive Mzobe, has resigned from his position.
During a ‘toyi-toyi’ on Tuesday, workers threatened to burn ‘impepho’ (incense) to cleanse Ugu and its entire management of bad luck.
Chanting songs like ‘asphelanga kushoda u Tolomane’, meaning ‘we are incomplete without (the late mayor) Cllr Tolomane Mnyayiza’, the workers are clearly not happy with Cllr Chiliza, who was sworn in just a week ago.

“We don’t want mayor Chiliza. He doesn’t understand our struggle and doesn’t want to listen to workers. He is just here to enrich himself,” said one Ugu employee.
ANC Lower South Coast Region spokesman, Selvan Chetty, said they were concerned about such utterances and encouraged workers to raise their grievances with the party.
“The mayor had been chosen through various organisational processes which were followed and all structures were consulted,” he said.
Mr Chetty added that, if workers were aggrieved by this appointment, they were welcome to raise it with regional leadership.
“Until then, we can’t entertain such public utterances.”
