Lie to the police at your peril, as Margate woman learns the hard way

The woman made a false report to police after being caught using her parents' vehicle without consent.

A MARGATE woman has been charged with perjury after she reported  a ‘crime’ to Margate police last Saturday.

The woman (26) reported to Margate police that she had parked her vehicle and gone to deposit money at an ATM.

According to police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, the woman claimed that as she neared the ATM, she was approached by a man who asked her for the money.

“The woman said that when she told him she had no money, he pushed her to the ground, grabbed her wallet, keys and ring before he and a second suspect drove off in her vehicle.

“The car was later recovered behind a shopping complex by police officers from the Port Shepstone 10111 call centre response unit,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

However, Detective Sergeant Michelle van Niekerk from Margate detectives discovered that the woman had in fact opened a false case as she had been using her parents’ vehicle without their permission. She was charged with perjury.

“We want to warn anyone who reports false cases for whatever reason, that they will be facing criminal charges and which could subsequently lead to a criminal record,” added Lt-Col Wiid.
