Illegal dog hunting rife in Lions Grove

Poaching has been a problem in Lions Grove for decades.

POACHERS with hunting dogs have become rampant, both on the coast and inland.

Members of the Umbango River Conservancy recently witnessed a group of men, accompanied by some 15 to 20 dogs, in Sastri Road, Lions Grove.

The conservancy now plans to take steps in the fight against poaching with dogs.

“These hunters are using minors to do their dirty work,” said chairman of the conservancy, Morgan Naidoo. “They use children to retrieve the carcasses of animals mauled by the dogs.

“There is a total disregard for private property and the environment. This has been a problem in the Lions Grove area for decades and it seems as if we are failing to curb this.”

He called on the SAPS, SPCA, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and other conservancies to meet and plan a way forward.

The Umbango River Conservancy, together with Alex Skene from the Umtentweni Conservancy, plans to set up a meeting with various organisations and the community.

If anybody would like to assist, suggestions can be forwarded to Morgan Naidoo at naidoomm@telkomsa.net or 076 2389826.

If anyone sees  hunters or their dogs, they are urged to call either Law Enforcement at 039 6825555 or the police at 10111.
