Armed intruders strike

A mother and her son suffered open wounds to their heads and the son was stabbed in the arm.

HIBBERDENE and Msinsini police arrested two men for being in possession of stolen property as well as unlicensed firearms and ammunition  on Tuesday this week.

On Tuesday night at about 8.30pm, a 55-year-old man and his daughter were at his tuck shop in Ndelu location, Msinsini, when two men entered. “They held the businessman at gunpoint and demanded money, believed to belong to a stokvel, which was in a bag,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

They fled with the money as well as a television set and a wallet containing cash and a driver’s licence. The businessman and his daughter were not injured.

Soon afterwards a 55-year-old woman reported to police that a group of five men had kicked open the door of her house, also in the Ndelu area.

She said all the intruders were armed with firearms. The men demanded money and assaulted the woman and her son. They searched the room and found money which had been hidden away.

Mother and her son suffered open wounds to their heads and the son was stabbed in the arm before the suspects fled.

“Sergeant Thembeka Primrose Magubane from Msinsini police was on duty in a patrol van when she heard about the robberies. She noticed a white sedan parked on the side of the road. When she approached, the car sped off. The driver then lost control of the vehicle which then hit a wall,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

Sgt Magubane arrested the driver (18). She found a television and a wallet in the vehicle which are believed to have been stolen during the first robbery. The suspect was detained and the car impounded for forensic investigation.

In the early hours of this morning, Constable Raju Soothama from Port Shepstone Public Order Policing (POP) and other officers were on duty in Hibberdene, when they received a tip-off.

When they searched a house after obtaining permission from the occupant, they found an unlicensed 9mm Walther pistol with nine live rounds and 75 shotgun rounds under his pillow.

He was also arrested and detained.

“It is thought that the two could be responsible for other robberies which have taken place in the Hibberdene area recently,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

Investigations are continuing.
