Abandoned properties add to Margate’s woes

Residents of Margate have raised concerns about properties that seem to be the hub of crime-related acts in the area.

‘SAD’ is the only word to describe the ugly sight that greets holidaymakers in Marine Drive, Margate.

While business owners stress about the deterioration of the holiday destination in general, some property owners just don’t seem to care.

Piles of building rubble and rubbish – including household refuse – is what you will find on a property right opposite 72 Marine Drive in Margate.

“The house is now used by drug lords and as a brothel,” said one concerned resident.

A neighbour said the property had been left to deteriorate for almost 10 years.

Residents have pleaded with the municipality to impose stringent by-laws for property owners who abandon their properties.

The value of our properties depreciates because nobody wants to buy a house next to a filthy property, – homeowner

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality spokesman Simon April requested more information on the properties and said the matter would be investigated.
