Teen lifesaver saves the day

The 'new kid on the block' proved himself in spectacular fashion.

CODY Hill (18), the new lifesaver at Tower 13, Margate, rightfully felt like a hero when he saved someone’s life at the pier last week.

When Cody heard a man had fallen off Margate pier and was in trouble, he ran from the tower, clambered over the rocks and helped the man to safety.

The spotlight was on Cody – the hawkers came running to notify the lifeguards that a man had fallen off the pier and holidaymakers were watching the drama unfold.

But, Cody managed to save the day, even beating the surf rescue boat, which had launched to assist.

Cody has been stationed at Margate for two months and this was his very first major rescue. As an avid bodyboarder, Cody knows the ocean well, which has helped in his lifesaving career.

Cody’s goal is to become a better lifeguard and to become a ‘senior’ so he can travel the world.

“I aim to get as much experience as possible so I can fullfil my dream to travel.”

His friend, Arno Viljoen (20), said he was very proud of Cody and was glad to work with someone so trustworthy and awesome.
