Meet this week’s crime fighter

This week the coast is introduced to Christine Southgate who heads up Margate Crime Watch which is not only combating crime but bringing the community together. Please email shonaa@dbn.caxton.co.za if you would like your organisation featured.

Christine Southgate – chairman of Margate Crime Watch

Margate Crime Watch was established a little over five years ago and is headed up by Christine Southgate, along with a committee of nine members who meet once a month to discuss ways to fight crime in the area.

They have 250 members on various Whatsapp groups and they cover seven blocks, from the Hibiscus Retirement Village to the highway, back down to the R620 to just before Ramsgate Retirement Village.

Crime statistics have shown a dramatic drop due to regular patrols, roving cameras and assistance from Maserforce and Wolf Security, as well as a dedicated community which assists wherever they can.

A newsletter is emailed to members, which keeps the community up to date with with its plans like ‘Know your Neighbour’, ‘Clean, Clear and Cut’ campaigns and upcoming events.

In summer there are organised walks where anyone is welcome. This is a great ‘social’ and allows people to meet other members.

Every three months a public meeting is held and everyone is encouraged to attend, as this allows constructive feedback to the committee regarding what the community wants.

Should you want to make a donation, receive the newsletter or become involved with the community initiative, Whatsapp Loraine at 0839699649 with full name and physical address, or you can join them on Facebook.
