Hibberdene father jailed for raping daughter

The man was sentenced to 40 years' imprisonment.

A HIBBERDENE father was convicted by the Scottburgh Regional Court last week of the rape and assault of his 9-year-old daughter.

The 32-year-old man was sentenced to twenty years’ imprisonment on each of the two counts of rape.

It was heard in court that on January 6 last year the girl, who lives with her grandmother in Nyangwini Ward, Hibberdene, returned from her father’s house and told her grandmother that she had been assaulted by her father.

The man had apparently earlier taken his daughter and another little girl to his rondavel, which is around 300m from the grandmother’s home.

The other child left the father and daughter together. The father’s neighbour alerted the grandmother that she had heard the little girl crying in her father’s house and suggested she should be examined.

The child then disclosed that she had been raped by her father twice the previous year.

The matter was reported to the police. The biological father was arrested and charged with two counts of rape.

The case was investigated by Captain Zithulele Zama of the Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS).

Major General Agnes Nxamagele, the UGU (Port Shepstone) Cluster Commander, commended the FCS detectives for the thorough investigation of the case and for ensuring that the rapist was put behind bars.

“It is heartbreaking that a father could betray his daughter’s trust and ravage her little body to satisfy his lust. The little girl need not live in fear anymore as her father will be behind bars for many a year to come,” said the general.
