UPDATE: Penny Sparrow appears in court

Attorney for the African National Congress, Peter Williams, has said that they will be monitoring the case.

FACING charges of crimen injuria, arch racist of South Africa, Penny Sparrow, appeared in the Scottburgh High Court on Wednesday, July 20.

Ms Sparrow was not asked to plead.

The case has been postponed to Monday, 15 August when she is due to appear in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court again.

The charges of crimen injuria were brought against Ms Sparrow by some 20 people who felt that their dignity had been severely impaired by the Facebook post which earned Ms Sparrow the title of arch racist of the country.

Crimen injuria under South African common law, is defined as the act of unlawfully, intentionally and seriously impairing the dignity of another.
