Dogs poisoned with ‘two-step’

The resident took his two dogs to a local veterinarian, who confirmed that they had been poisoned.

RISING crime in the Pennington and surrounding areas is cause enough for concern, however, criminals have become more ruthless in their tactics.

A Pienaar Street, Pennington, resident’s dogs were poisoned on last Friday.

The resident took his two dogs to a local veterinarian, who confirmed that it was poison. Sadly, one dog died as a result of the poison. The other dog was kept overnight on a drip.

It’s called Aldicarb, explained the resident, who added that they found a small packet at their gate as well as in the dead dog’s stomach.

Also known as Temik or ‘two-step’, the poison (granules of almost gum-like powder) is used by farmers who purchase it from an accredited dealer in order to kill rats.

Unfortunately, some farm workers steal this poison.

Criminals who make use of the poisonous substance place it inside meat, preferably meat with a strong odour such as Russians, viennas and polony.

If you suspect that your dog has been poisoned, it is advised that you mix washing powder with water to form a paste and feed it to your dog, which should cause the animal to vomit.

The animal should then be immediately taken to your veterinarian for further care.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) suggests that pet owners train their animals not to eat food other than that given to them in their bowls.

As this may be difficult, it is also advised that pet owners remain vigilant. The SPCA further advised that, should poison be found on your property, further precautions be taken.

Handle the material with gloves as it could be absorbed through the skin.
