UPDATE: Protest in Mkholombe

Protesters are demanding electricity and housing.

COMMUNITY members caused mayhem when they stoned cars and blockaded the streets with burning tyres,  in a protest over electricity and housing shortages yesterday.

When The Herald arrived, police were an alert, armed with assault rifles.

Protesters refused to co-operate with SAPS members, demanding to be addressed by Eskom and Hibiscus officials at their ‘preferred’ place.

Municipal manager, Max Mbili tried to intervene but protesters wouldn’t hear of it.

Several community members were arrested by police for disturbing the  peace and causing damage to property.

“We wont speak to you until the police release those arrested, ” said angry protesters.

“We will not stop until our demands are met, we have been patient for years, enough is enough.”

Protesters have since threatened to close off the main Harding road if their demands are not met.

SAPS members are monitoring the situation.
