Three raped in Izingolweni

One of the victims was a nine-year-old girl raped by her cousin.

SOUTH Africa is reported to have one of the highest incidences of rape in the the world, and that includes the sexual assault of children, babies and women.

Police are now investigating three separate rapes which occurred last week in the Izingolweni area.

In the first case, a 29-year-old woman was raped at Nongidi ward last Monday. The woman had just arrived home from church when a man she knew arrived at her house.

“The man raped her and fled, taking her pants,” said police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka. Police have arrested the suspect in Machi and he is due to appear in court soon.

In a separate incident, a 15-year-old girl was raped by a taxi driver in Mbeni Ward last Tuesday.

The teenager had apparently been seen drunk  at school with her friends and was reportedly taken home by a 26-year-old taxi driver. When the girl’s father arrived home, he called the police and the taxi driver was arrested.

He appeared in the Izingolweni court on Monday this week and the case was postponed to June 20.

Last Monday, the mother of a nine-year-old girl took her child to the clinic to have a virginity test. “The mother said she had noticed that her child had been acting strangely and had a bad attitude,” said Captain Mfeka.

Test results from the clinic showed that her daughter had been raped.

The mother questioned her child and it was revealed that the girl had been raped by her 20-year-old cousin since 2014.  Police arrested the man.

He appeared in the Izingolweni court on Monday this week and the case was postponed to  June 20 for further investigation.

All cases are being investigated by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
