Double ‘love’ catch for snake handler

The pair of green mambas was spotted mating in a tree.

TWO green mambas were caught at Southcity Christian College on Monday this week by Sarel van der Merwe, the snake catcher from Pure Venom Reptile Park in Izotsha.

Sarel said workers were clearing the bushes at the back of the school’s rugby field when the snakes were spotted in a tree, apparently in the process of  mating.

“We call this pre-season mating. A female snake can hold sperm up to two years, just in case they don’t find a partner in the summer season,” Sarel explained.

Sarel managed to nab both these highly venomous tree-dwelling snakes, which each measured about 1,6 to 1,7 metres in length.

The snakes were taken to Pure Venom.

Anyone who needs a snake caught can contact Sarel at 082 6831604 or Pure Venom at 039 6850704.
