Quick-thinking hijack victim escapes

The man managed to open the boot of the vehicle and escape unnoticed.

QUICK thinking may be the only reason a Renishaw man is alive today.

The 26-year-old drove to the Park Rynie beach campsite at around 8pm last Thursday. Shortly after he arrived, two men crept up to the driver from the rear of his vehicle.

One of them was armed with a handgun and they forced him to get into the boot of the car, – Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

The man refused to co-operate with the criminals and was struck on the head with the butt of the gun. He was then forced into the boot of his vehicle. The hijackers got into the vehicle and drove off.

As they slowed down for a stop street, the man spotted an opportunity and managed to open the boot of the vehicle and escape unnoticed.

“A case of carjacking was registered by the Scottburgh SAPS for investigation. The victim’s cellphone was taken from his pocket by one of the suspects,” said Capt Pandarum.

The vehicle was subsequently found abandoned in the Umgababa area by Warrant Officer Max Khan of the Umzinto K9 Unit.

The case is being investigated by the Port Shepstone Vehicle Identification Section. The vehicle has  been returned to the owner.
