New handler for experienced Bear

A retired search and rescue officer in Pietermaritzburg has handed over his specialised search and rescue police dog to a local officer.

A RETIRED search and rescue officer in Pietermaritzburg has handed over his specialised search and rescue police dog, Bear, to Warrant Officer Rommel da Rosa from Port Shepstone Search and Rescue Unit.

The veteran officer, Lieutenant Jack Haskins, who has been involved in many rescues, including some at the Dusi Canoe Marathon, Midmar Mile and many drownings, is retiring from the force.

Lt Haskins, who has worked with W/O Da Rosa since January last year, said he was heartsore, but knew  that he would one day give Bear to W/O Da Rosa.

On Monday this week W/O Da Rosa said he was given the dog as his dog had to be boarded after a recent accident.

“I am looking forward to working with Bear, but it was sad taking him from Lt Haskins, as these dogs are part of our lives,” he said.

W/O Da Rosa said he had learned a lot from Lt Haskins.

“The officer identified to take over from Lt Haskins has got huge shoes to fill,” he said.

Lt Da Rosa wished Lt Haskins well on his retirement.
