Tree falls on passing car

A motorist was lucky to escape injury when a tree fell onto his vehicle.

OVERHANGING branches on the R102 between Commercial Road and Rethman Drive are a  menace, say motorists and residents.

Recent heavy rains and wind caused a tree to fall and strike a light pole and a passing bakkie.

Since September last year,Umtentweni resident Mike Davies has been contacting Hibiscus Coast Municipality about the trees that obscure the newly installed LED lights along the R102 between Commercial road and Rethman Drive.

“I initially reported the branches on September 30. It took 10 weeks to get a reference number and 14 weeks to get a reply from Hibiscus Coast Municipality. Is this service delivery?”

He eventually received a response and was told that he had to contact the Department of Transport.

Another resident said: “What’s the use of having street lights if they are obstructed by the tree branches?”

Neither the municipality nor DOT had commented at the time of writing.
