Water meter woes continue for pensioners

The meter has been covered in an overgrowth of bush for more than a year now.

UGU promotes the ‘working together we can do more’ statement but, for Freeland Park pensioners Rob and Joan Ray, it is just that – a statement.

As reported last year, Ugu claimed that the Rays were consuming an average of 0.648 litres of water every minute of the day from January 2015 to December 2015, according to their bills.

With an amount of 28 kilolitres of water consumed in December last year, an average 903.22 litres of water had to be consumed each day. Bearing in mind the Rays do not even have a pool, pets or garden,  this amount is absurd.

Factor in the fact that one cannot even access the Ray’s water meter, then you have a recipe for a guessing game, which is what the Rays are claiming Ugu is best at, as they have not to this day sent out someone to investigate or examine the water meter. This has been covered in an overgrowth of bush for over a year now.

Mr Ray, who has been attempting to get Ugu to rectify the problem since February 2015, has been left with what seem to be empty promises. In an email from Linda Zama, who works at the Ugu offices in Park Rynie, sent on Tuesday, March 2015, she informed Mr Ray that “a technician will be coming through to perhaps relocate the meter, depending on the state it is in. A correct reading will then be taken and your account adjusted accordingly. The reference number for this query is – 03-2015-EN-113. This query should be closed in seven days.”

“No one has come to read the meter or relocate it,” said Mr Ray.

Since February 2015 he has been taking his own readings and the water consumption is nowhere near what he is being charged for, but still nobody at Ugu will help him.

“I would also like to warn other consumers not to take their water bill for granted,” he said.

Ugu was contacted for comment, but no response was immediately forthcoming.
