Umdoni municipality strikes gold

On Thursday, the media was invited to a ground breaking ceremony in Umzinto where a proposed 7 500m² new shopping centre was unveiled.

THE tide seems to have turned at last for a stagnating Umdoni, with millions earmarked for development and upgrades.

For starters, the municipality proudly announced this week that the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) had approved R12-million to upgrade CBD roads as well as landscaping and establishing landmarks at major intersections.

The funds fall under the Small Town Rehabilitation Programme and will be spread over two years.

Umdoni and COGTA are determined that all should be done properly and a professional project steering committee is to meet monthly to keep everything on track.

Dilapidated and forgotten Umzinto is also destined for a revival.

On Thursday, the media was invited to a ground breaking ceremony in Umzinto where a proposed 7 500m² new shopping centre was unveiled.

With the first sod already turned, the Umzinto Mall will consist of shops such as Clicks, Debonairs, Pep and Ackerman’s to name a few, said CEO of SABI Construction, Jaco Odendaal.

However, there are fears among existing businessmen on the north side of the town, that they would suffer with the mall on the south side.

The Mall is expected to be operational by December this year.

In addition:

  • Renishaw Hills lifestyle village is still on track;
  • Finningley Eco Estate is also still a go;
  • The proposed airport is still being discussed and
  • Sources claim that the ‘biggest water park in Africa’ is still going ahead with the family of the slain developers, Krugersdorp couple Peter and Joan Meyer, determined to build it as a legacy to them.
