R3,6m facelift for council chambers

The cinema-style galleries will be accessible to the public.

RAY Nkonyeni councillors can look forward to a R3,6 million revamp of their chambers.

To recap, Hibiscus Coast and Ezinqoleni municipalities are to merge and the new, combined body of local governors is to be named after the late Ray Nkonyeni, a teacher and admired ‘peace-maker’ during the IFP-ANC conflict that ravaged the area decades ago.

The current Hibiscus Coast chambers will just be too small to accommodate councillors from Ezingoleni as well, so both municipalities have agreed to club in R1,8 million each to revamp the building.

Plans were unveiled at the Exco meeting on Tuesday this week.

Municipal manager Max Mbili said parking near the Stannic building would make way for phase one and phase two with cinema-style galleries accessible to the public.

The revamp is expected to take up to eight months. Meanwhile, meetings will take place at the civic hall.

In another development, the human settlement department has now moved from Marburg to 782 Shepstone Road, Shelly Beach, behind Hibiscus Coast Municipality’s wellness clinic.
