What’s happening to Sugar Mill Road?

Work is expected to be completed in five months.

A SPECIAL briefing session concerning the repair progress of Sugar Mill Road was held  last week Wednesday.

“After a lot of concerns on why work had stopped on this road, I managed to get hold of the contractors and the Department of Transport to update us on the progress,” said human rights activist Selvan Chetty.

After many reports on the bad state of the road the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Ravi Pillay, addressed the community on the refurbishment of the dangerous road last year.

He explained that more than R70 million would be spent repairing the P464, Sugar Mill Road and the Oscar Borchers Road, and the contract had been awarded to Naidu Consulting from Durban.

Work on the road had started but, after some time, work stopped. People wanted to know why the road had been left half done.

Last Wednesday Mxolisi Kaunda, the chairman of the KwaZulu-Natal transport portfolio, addressed local community leaders on the progress of the repairs.

Ravi Govender of Naidu Consulting explained that the previous contractor’s contract had expired and that a new contractor had to be appointed.

“The good news is that the project has now been handed over to a new contractor, Amaphiko Transport,’ said Mr Govender.

“On behalf of MEC Pillay, I would like to thank the community for being patient when it came to the repairing of this road. I really appreciate that there have been no protests regarding the road,” he said.

Work on the road restarted last week and the contractor has assured the community that it would be completed in five months.
