Who was Ray Nkonyeni?

Hibiscus Coast Municipality is soon to be named after this man, described being 'a humble hero'.

SOME said he was ‘harsh’, but in reality the late Ray Nkonyeni (after whom the municipality is soon to be named) was a ‘humble man’.

Former African National Congress Regional chairman, Sthembiso Cele, was giving a memorial lecture in the Gamalakhe community hall last Saturday. He described the community hero as ‘harmless, yet fearless’.

“I would describe him as a person who brought peace to the South Coast, someone who loved people and always wanted unity.”

Mr Cele said that Ray certainly would have been disapproving and disappointed with any divisions within the ANC.

“Ray did not like positions, but we would force him to lead and he would humbly accept.”

He pleaded for people to follow Ray’s lead and distinguish between personal and organisational issues.

There were times when his house was bombed and he even lost his daughter, but he never looked for revenge.

Mr Cele said people needed to be informed about the man who did so much. They needed the knowledge so that they could defend the man when others questioned why his name had been chosen for the new, expanded municipality.
