Watch: Water restored for residents in Uvongo

The municipality utilised internal resources, which has allowed them to save a substantial amount of money.

UVONGO and Manaba residents who were forced to live without water for more than 10 days can now quench their thirst with water from their taps as Ugu District Municipality has finally resolved the water crisis.

The water supply has been restored following the successful restoration of the municipality’s damaged water network. The Uvongo pipeline burst near the SPCA on the toll road on March 17.

A TLB was dispatched with a plumbing team and the pipeline was repaired but the excavator was bogged down in the swampy area while trying to repair a second break. A diversion of the pipeline was planned and the municipality opted for a long-term solution by re-routing a 458-metre pipeline from the entrance of the SPCA opposite Masinenge along Quarry Road, bypassing the swampy area and then under the toll road.

“For this project, the municipality utilised internal resources, which has allowed it to save a substantial amount of money,” said spokesman France Zama. “These savings will be utilised to ensure progress of other existing water supply stabilisation projects. In the future the municipality is to commence with another phase of rerouting of pipelines to ensure such incidents are avoided,” said Mr Zama.
