Municipality provides bridge over stormy waters

A total of 11 people were employed during the construction of the bridge.

THE extension of the Gwabeni bridge in the kwaMadlala area, ward 14, came about because the bridge washed away with every heavy storm. The residents were unable to utilise the road and the bridge during washaways, yet it was their only access to the main road.

Hibiscus Coast Municipality mayor, Councillor Cynthia Mqwebu, said at the bridge handover last Wednesday that the budget of R 450 000 was originally available during the 2013/2014 financial year and in the adjustment budget of the same year the additional funds were made available to cover the full amount of the construction cost.

“Margate Construction Company was appointed through a tender process. The award value of the project was R1 781 768.70 in total and the project duration was five months,” said Cllr Mqwebu.

The project entailed the extension of the existing portal culvert structures up to 24.7m long and 4.9m wide. A total of 11 people were employed during the construction of the bridge.
