Policeman dies after Shelly Beach crash

The 39-year-old police officer was stationed at Margate SAPS.

THE accident which occurred at the traffic lights near South Coast Mall on Wednesday has claimed the life of a Margate policeman.

It is believed that a police vehicle from Margate police station and two other vehicles collided at the intersection. The crash  left the policeman, his colleague a policewoman and a civilian injured. They were taken to hospital

According to police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka, Constable Xolani Phephu (39) and Reservist Constable Betty Gumede who are stationed at Margate SAPS, were travelling towards Southport when the collision occurred.

“Constable Phephu sustained serious injuries and died yesterday morning. Officer Gumede has  been transferred to a Durban hospital,” said Captain Mfeka.

Both Cst Phephu and R/Cst Gumede were on duty at the time. Margate police are investigating.
