Rapist jailed thanks to taxi driver

A man has been jailed for raping a mentally challenged woman.

TAXI driver, Xolani Mbotho, hailed as a Good Samaritan for his observant and quick-thinking actions, helped to get a rapist convicted in the Port Shepstone Regional Court last Monday.

Regional Magistrate Johann Bester sentenced Bhawi Michael Chiliza (34), to eight years behind bars for the rape of a 26-year-old mentally challenged woman in the Murchison area in March 2012.

Mr Mbotho was driving past when he saw movements in the bush. Although he was transporting passengers at the time, he quickly turned his taxi around and went to investigate.

As Mr Mbotho approached the scene, Chiliza, who was on top of the woman, got up and dressed.

Mr Mbotho took the severely traumatised woman to a nearby clinic in his taxi  after she told him that she had been raped.

He also left his details at the clinic in case police needed to contact him.

The taxi driver knew Chiliza well, as he had a distinctive limp, and greatly assisted police in his arrest.
