Apply for your Smart ID card at your bank

The innovation would help ease the queues at Home Affairs’ 403 offices nationwide.

APPLYING for a Smart ID card will soon be a lot simpler.

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has announced that from April, those eligible for the ID cards will be able to apply for them at participating banks.

The Minister said  FNB and Standard Bank had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Home Affairs for the pilot project.

Nedbank has apparently indicated its willingness to sign up and it is hoped Absa will also come on board.

According to a report on SA Breaking News Minister Gigaba added that the South African Post Office had also been approached  with the aim of reaching an agreement on how some of its infrastructure could be used.

“A person can … go to the Home Affairs kiosk in the bank, submit all their applications, take their biometric photograph, automated fingerprint and their electronic signature and that is compiled to an electronic package and deposited to Home Affairs,” he said.

The Minister said the innovation would help ease the queues at Home Affairs’ 403 offices nationwide.
